Difference Between MBR vs GPT Disk

Master boot records and guide partition tables are both types of partition styles. That is, when you buy a disk drive, after purchasing it, you have to do a lot of operations on it to be able to use, one of which is to create partitions. Then there are two different styles to master boot records and guide partition table to do this work. That is, how your Partitioning Information will be saved in the drive or there are two ways to store it.

It also contains the information about where the partitions are starting from so that your operating system can know which part of the barging system and which partitions are bootable. Before partitioning your disk drive you have to decide which style of the partition you want to use. That is the guide partition table or master boot record. In the partition style, you have to select a type of partition style.

MBR vs GPT: MBR (Master Boot Record)

MBR was introduced in 1983 and became the industry standard. It is introduced with IBM PC DOS 2.0. Master boot record is used for partitioning and booting from disks.

Master Book Record As you will know by name that there is some special information which helps the computer boot the operating system kept above laptops. When you buy a computing device such as a computer or a laptop, the operating system is installed to use it. The information related to which this operating system is and where it will boot will be stored in the master boot record.

Master boot record is a special boot sector. When you buy a hard disk drive, it is divided into sectors to use it. So at the beginning of the boot sector drive i.e. is the first sector of your physical disk. This boot sector has a bootloader. The bootloader is an information in which the operating system is installed.

MBR’s Limitations
  • Master Boot Rector supports only two terabytes of disk. That is, if your hard disk type is more than two Terra bytes, then it will not work with it.
  •  The master boot record supports only 4 primary partitions.
  • If you want a higher partition then you will have to create an extended partition or change it to a primary partition. And in that extended partition, you can create multiple logical partitions.

MBR vs GPT: GPT (Guided Partition Tables)

GPT means Globally Unique Identifier. With this type of partition style, when you create a partition from your hard disk drive, they have a globally unique id that means that there are fewer chances in which the worldwide partition of any other id will be created on any other hard disk. This is because a random stream is used to create a guide partition table so that the number of the partition or global is unique.

GPT is a new standard that’s gradually replacing MBR. It is associated with UEFI.

Advantage of GBT
  • Drives can be much, much larger and size limits will depend on the operating system and its file systems.
  • GPT allows nearly unlimited partitions and the limit here will be your Operating System.
  • Windows allows up to 128 partitions on a GPT drive.
  • No need to create an Extended Partition.
  • Much more robust than MBR.
  • GPT stores multiple copies of this data across the disk.
  • Can recover if the data is corrupted
  • GPT stores cyclic redundancy check (CRC) values to check that its data is intact.
  • If the data is corrupted, GPT can notice the problem and attempt to recover the damaged data from another location on the disk.
